Charging Connector
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and as a result, the need for EV charging infrastructure is also growing rapidly. One of the critical components of EV charging infrastructure is the charging connectors and adapters used at charging stations.
EV charging connectors and adapters come in various types, each with unique features, compatibility, and charging speeds. Let's dive into the different types of EV charging connectors and adapters.
- Type 1 (J1772)
Type 1, also known as the J1772 connector, is a standard connector used in North America and Japan. The Type 1 connector has five pins, two of which are dedicated to the charging signal, and three pins are for safety ground, earth ground, and proximity detection. The Type 1 connector is typically rated at 16 amps or 32 amps, and its maximum charging speed is limited to 7.2 kW.
- Type 2 (Mennekes)
Type 2, also known as the Mennekes connector, is a standard connector used in Europe, Australia, and some parts of Asia. The Type 2 connector has seven pins, with two pins dedicated to the charging signal, and five pins are for safety ground, earth ground, proximity detection, and temperature sensing. The Type 2 connector is typically rated at 32 amps or 63 amps, and its maximum charging speed is limited to 22 kW.
- CHAdeMO
CHAdeMO is a fast-charging connector used primarily by Japanese automakers such as Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Toyota. CHAdeMO connectors are typically rated at 125 amps and can provide up to 62.5 kW of charging power.
- CCS (Combined Charging System)
CCS, also known as the Combined Charging System, is a fast-charging connector used primarily by European and American automakers. The CCS connector combines the Type 2 connector for AC charging and an additional two pins for DC fast charging. CCS connectors are typically rated at 200-350 amps and can provide up to 350 kW of charging power.
- Tesla Connector
The Tesla connector is a proprietary connector used exclusively by Tesla vehicles. The Tesla connector combines AC and DC charging capabilities and is typically rated at 72 amps for AC charging and up to 250 kW for DC fast charging.
Charging adapter potting compound
For charging systems, fast charging in a safe way and long-term reliability also bring the challenge. Honeywell provides thermal interface materials to effectively dissipate heat from high voltage and power components like inverters. Besides, thermal potting material helps to protect components against outdoor environments and fix those cables in positions for charge connectors.
Key Application Consideration
Excellent Encapsulation
- Enough thermal conductivity (> 0.5 W/mK)
- Hardness (Shore A50~A90) for fixing and protection
- Electrical insulation with high dielectric strength
- Self-leveling avoids void-free encapsulation
- Flame-retardant meet UL 94 V-0
- Long-term reliability for EV charging station
- Stable performance in an outdoor environment (temperature and humidity)
Great Manufacturability
- Light weight with low specific gravity
- Suitable for high-volume manufacture
- Fast curing, short gel time
- Low viscosity for easy potting and dispensing
